Cartagena - Costa Calida

Very few European cities have the rich and monumental history that is possessed by Cartagena. This town was for more than two thousand years a strategic Mediterranean port; surrounded by fortifications it encloses numerous fine archaeological remains and naval archives. The cities sea fairing history is present in every aspect of this interesting city.

It was founded almost 2,300 years ago and has a long history which has been created by the consecutive occupation of numerous civilisations. Worth a visit and particular mention is Los Urritias Beach which is more than 1 kilometre in length, boasting great water sports and diving. Also the nearby Club Nautico de Los Urrutias which forms an island some 100 m from the beach with an access bridge built on solid-wall piles. Inside are four jetties with surrounding quays. In these areas there are numerous great chiringuitos (beach side bar restaurants).

This is an ancient seaport and naval dockyard where the first submarine was built in 1900 and where submarines are still built today. Shopping promises to be exciting at the large shopping centre. A Corte Ingles department store is due to open this year. Unlike Murcia which has no direct route from Torrevieja and Alicante and is linked only by busy roads, Cartagena offers easy access and has the makings of a growing commercial centre. It's the ideal centre for the Costa Calida Development between Puerto de Mazzaron and San Pedro del Pinatar.
